Dan Patch!

So, I read Crazy Good: The True Story of Dan Patch, the Most Famous Horse in America a couple months ago. The book was quite entertaining, and it was fascinating to look into the history of harness racing just before the automobile marginalized horses so much.

And, of course, I subsequently went out and googled around till I found the video. His leg deformation isn't easy to see from the pictures.

One of the things that doesn't readily come to mind until reading something like this is that the Indiana Pacers are named after the horses. Pacing apparently was big in the Midwest, and northern Indiana was known as a breeding ground for pacers.

The poisoning of Lady Patch also shocked me - you think of that era, especially the Midwest, as a simpler, politer time, but it was apparently pretty cutthroat.

Anywho, Dan Patch.
