In defiance of October...

Ok, so I may have screwed myself for NaNoWriMo.

On the other hand, I'm 17 pages (~9k words) into this story I started September 30. I didn't mean to. I really was going to try to save it for NaNoWriMo. I just couldn't let it sit. Even though October is historically atrocious for story survival.

It does remind me why I like to write in fictional worlds, though. It's set in about 1903 in a fictional town probably in Nevada. This is somewhat problematic, since I've never been to Nevada, and my knowledge of details about the history of the Western U.S. are still sketchy.

Like, the details of Chinese-American citizenship in California. And the development of electricity in homes, and the gramophone, and street cars, and fashions.

I'm thinking about emailing the UC-Berkeley library about the degree offerings of the university in the 1890s.

I don't mind if it gets a steam-punkish flavor in the technology realm, but the other historical details will irk me if I try to guess or fabricate.

Have I mentioned here before that I have a history M.A.?
